How Mindfulness Practice, Walking Meditation, Guided Visualization (guided imagery) Can Benefit People With Parkinson's.
How can walking meditation help with Parkinson's?
Walking meditation, a form of mindfulness practice, has been found in a randomized control trial to help people with Parkinson's significantly improve motor function, maintain functional mobililty, and reduced anxiety, as measured by well accepted a Parkinson's Symptom Scale (UPDRS and UPDRS-II), the Five Time Sit-to-Stand Scale (FTSTS), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD-A) (Thiamwong et al. 2022). It was practiced three times per week for twelve weeks.
Can mindfulness practice benefit people with Parkinson's?
Mindfulness has been shown to improve physical, emotional, and cognitive outcomes in people with Parkinson’s disease. Studies report significant reductions in anxiety and depression, the most distressing non-motor symptoms (Pickut et al., 2015; Advokat et al., 2016). It also enhances quality of life by promoting acceptance, emotional resilience, and a greater sense of control. In some studies, and walking mediation, a form of mindfulness practice, has helped maintain or improve balance and functional mobility (Van Puymbroeck et al., 2011; Thiamwong et al., 2022). Neuroimaging research suggests mindfulness may support neuroplastic changes in brain regions related to attention and motor planning. Additionally, mindfulness has been linked to better sleep and reduced fatigue, both known to interfere with daily functioning. These findings support mindfulness as a low-risk, empowering tool to improve both motor and non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease.
How can hypnosis, guided imagery, or visualization help people with Parkinson's?
What can hypnosis, guided imagery, and visualization do for people with Parkinson’s disease?
Emerging research suggests that hypnosis, guided imagery, and visualization may offer important benefits for people with Parkinson’s disease, particularly as supportive therapies for both motor and non-motor symptoms. Motor imagery exercises, in which individuals mentally rehearse specific movements, improve gait, step length, balance, and coordination by activating motor planning areas of the brain (Tamir et al., 2007; Braun et al., 2006). Guided imagery can help reduce anxiety, promote emotional stability, and foster a stronger sense of control and participation in the healing process. It has been suggested that these practices may also support neuroplasticity, reconnect individuals with movement memory, and lower stress by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Many people report increased confidence, reduced symptom severity, and improved quality of life. Hypnosis, guided imagery, and visualizaiton can serve as good complments to medication and physical therapy in Parkinson's care. They are safe, low-cost, and non-invasive. Mindfulness is easily practice by patient alone. Guided imagery and visualizaiton can be practiced with a guide or MP3 audio downloads.Next: Pain Management
