What Mindfulness and Presence Are and How They are Practiced in Meditation and Daily Life.
1. What are mindfulness and presence?
Mindfulness is the ability to purposely pay attention from almost a third-person perspective to the present moment without judgment. It helps you become aware of your inner and outer experiences as they unfold. As Sylvia Boorstein puts it, “Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience.” Presence is fully “here”. That is engaged, grounded, and alert to the now, without being distracted by the past or future. In the context of holding a serious conversation with another person that is the ability to listen giving them your total attention with thinking on the inside "I wish I had said that" (past) or "I'll say 'he did it first' when he finished complaining" (furture). While mindfulness is often a mental skill, presence includes a felt, embodied sense of calm awareness of here and now.
How do you practice mindfulness or presence during meditation?
You begin by choosing a point on which to consciously focus. That could be your breath, body sensations, surrounding sights, sounds, physical sensations, or movements such as eating or walking. When your unconscious starts feeding you distracting thoughts, as it naturally does in attempts to protect you, you gently return your attention to your point of conscious focus without any drama or self-judgment. Over time, this builds mental stability and emotional clarity. Presence can also be cultivated by resting in open awareness, letting go of mental effort, and simply being—feeling breath move, sounds arise, and stillness grow as you allow yourself be a part of your environment here and now and not separate from it. (Kabat-Zinn, J 1990, Davidson, RJ, et al 2003, Steed, James, 2024) Try this: Sit quietly for 2 minutes. Breathe. Gently label what arises: thinking… hearing… breathing… noticing… If you don't want to bother with labelling just respond to any distractions with a simple response, "I know." Then return to the breath.
How do you practice mindfulness or presence in daily life?
Mindfulness in daily life means bringing attention to everyday actions—eating, walking, listening, or even washing dishes without daydreaming, planning, nightmariing, or rehashing old conversations or rehearsing future converstions in your head. It also means noticing those thoughts and feelings without rushing to react. You can just respond them with an "I-know" and return to conscoius attent to what you are doing. Presence deepens this by grounding you in the body, allowing you to feel centered even in challenging moments. You can return to the present through breath awareness, pausing before you speak, or silently asking, "What’s happening right now?" (Siegal, D.J.,2007; Steed, James 2024) Example: When washing your hands, notice the temperature, the scent of the soap, the feeling of water—just this, just now.
